I have a problem with many buzz-words circulating around the health, fitness and nutrition networks online. Detox and clean-eating are the two that bother me the most, both of which frequently incorporate rules into the daily living and eating practices that they encourage. Rules though? ‘Rules’ is a very loaded term because it is right or wrong, black or white, this or that.
The implementation of ‘rules’ suggests a wrong doing for not abiding. Rules set a standard and anything that doesn’t meet this standard bar is deemed as the opposite of success? Failure. A success story of achieving and maintaining health is great, but anything less is not failure. Failure and rules have no place in a healthy relationship with food and fitness.
The mere saying “I can’t have that” to yourself immediately makes you want it more than you would otherwise – and again, this language is in the ‘this or that’ category of rules. You only can’t eat something if there really is a reason why, such as genuine gluten intolerance, or managing diabetes or allergy. Then you can’t eat something, but if you’re implementing these rules on yourself for the sake of “health” then there is a lot of room for improvement in your relationship with eating and health – which will likely go slightly deeper than implementing more rules, or experiencing a lack of rules such as managing boredom or stress without resorting to food, changing how you view food and learning to listen to your body instead of ignoring it.
Over the next 10 days I am going to write a series of guidelines that I follow in my own life to maintain a healthy relationship with food. By changing the language I use around food, my attitude towards food has also changed. It is no longer something to be controlled, or something to be feared. Nutrition and nourishment are no longer a focus out of a compulsive denial of nutrients to my body, but a source of interest and passion to share so others like you, who are like me, can reach and maintain a healthy position in relation to food, diet and eating.
