Songs of My Journey: 2012, The Start of Therapy

It was recommended to me that I could listen to calming music and meditate. Other people had praised the effects of meditation on their ability to manage the turbulence of their mental health difficulties. I started listening to Enigma, ‘The Cross of Changes 2’ again, and again, and again…for years. The lyrics form ‘Return of Innocence’ struck me. I felt as if the song was talking to me, this song was made for me and my recovery.

“Love, devotion, feelings, emotion
Don’t be afraid to be weak
Don’t be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend that will be the return to yourself, the return to innocence
The return to innocence
And if you want then start to laugh, if you must then start to cry
Be yourself don’t take
Just believe in destiny
Don’t care what people think
Just follow your own way
Don’t give up
And use the chance
To return to innocence
That’s not the beginning of the end that a return to yourself
The return to innocence”

I listened to this song around the start of my Schema Therapy, and during my admission at the same time, because this was my song, for me, about my life, written in advance of my mental demise in 1993. They knew I’d need this some 10 years later.
